Choosing a Perfect Stain or Sealer for Your Deck

Sealers and strainers are of two types- oil-based and water-based. Oil-based finishes focus more on colour and maintain it for a longer time while water-based paints make the wood durable. There are 4 different types of sealers and stains as mentioned below. Each of them contains a different amount of pigments. To provide greater safety to the wood you need to apply high pigment stain but it will give lesser visibility of wood grain and texture.

Clearwater repellent provides very basic safety like waterproofing, minimum UV protection, and sometimes prevention from rot and insect infestation. Because these are clear or natural-look finishes, they hardly protect the wood from sun rays and the underlying wood will start to turn grey in colour within a few months. The Performance level of clear water repellent is from 6 months to up to two years.

Toner or Tinted water repellent is just like a transparent coating, it has extra pigment or colour in it. It brings out the actual look of the wood even if some fading has occurred and protect it from mould growth and slow down the greying of wood.

The Semi-transparent coating gives a very subtle and smooth look to the wood. It has extra-pigment in it which prevents damaging of wood from harmful UV rays and retains the wood grain and texture look. It lasts for more than 3 years.

If you are applying a coat of new paint over an old one then do remember it should be darker or the same as the old colour of the wood. To get the best results, always remember to scrap the old coating thoroughly. You can conduct a small patch-test of the stain in any hidden area to check the actual colour and appearance.
